Elsie Bingaman Phillips, 86, retired teacher

David Phillips described Elsie Bingaman Phillips as a dynamic, happy person who had a lot of charisma.

"She was one of those remarkable people and she just happened to be my mother," he said.

In 1982, Mrs. Phillips suffered a stroke that left her paralyzed.

"She was still active up to the time of the stroke so it was quite a change for her," said Phillips of Accokeek, who cared for his mother for 5 1/2 years.

Mrs. Phillips, 86, died of a heart attack following a long illness on Nov. 3, 1988, at Southern Maryland Hospital in Clinton.

She was born on Feb. 10, 1902, in Chariton, Iowa.  She received her bachelor's degree from Simpson College in Indianola, iowa, in 1925.  Mrs. Phillips taught school for 28 years in Iowa, California and Maryland.  Eighteen of those years were spent teaching sixth grade at Hyattsville Elementary.

Mrs. Phillips was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church of Hyattsville, an officer of United Church Women, a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, organizer and leader for "Great Decisions" study groups, coordinator of political candidates forum, and was active in Social Concerns, Common Cause and the Schizophrenic Association.  She was a member of the Maryland Retired Teachers Association, National Education Association and Alpha Chi Omega. She had been a member of All Souls Unitarian Church for more than 20 years and in recent years was a member of Davies Memorial Unitarian Church in Camp Springs.

Besides her son, other survivors include her daughters, Paula Phillips Shaner of Baltimore and Alice Phillips Loughry of Los Altos, Calif.; grandchildren, David Phillips of University Park, Richard Phillips of Accokeek, Walter Phillips of Accokeek, Alex Loughry of San Jose, Calif., and Lynn Loughry Bergquist of Palo Alto, Calif.; great-grandchildren, Scott Deibert of San Jose, John Phillips of University Park and Kristina Bergquist of Pale Alto; sister, Frances Myers of Lake Worth, Fla.; and brother, George Bingaman of Regina, Canada.

A memorial service will be at 3p.m. Dec. 3 at Davies Memorial Unitarian Church, 7400 Temple Hill Road, Camp Springs.

Contributions may be made to Meals on Wheels, 9601 Rhode Island
Ave., College Park, Md. 20740.
