Diversity Growth Plan Update

Since the Diversity Growth Plan was written in Jan.' 05, these milestones have been reached or changes have been made in ascending chronological order (click to start at the bottom).:

  • Feb. 24, 2008 - Congregation voted unanimously to become an official Welcoming Congregation (information from UUA site).
  • June 20-24, 2007 - General Assembly in Portland, Oregon where we were recongnized as a Breakthrough Congregation for growth in racial diversity. 16 members (over 10%) flew cross-country to be there and we had our first delegate of color, Angel Savoy James, who spoke out during Plenary VII on Actions of Immediate Witness concerning issues of marginalized people. We presented our workshop (powerpoint, web page of presentation) and sold many copies of "Charge of the Chalice".
  • April 26-27, 2007 - District spring conference where first recognized as a Breakthrough Congregation, we introduced our GA video & workshop, and Joyce Dowling was awarded Outstanding UU Adult for "many years of service that have embodied the ideals of Unitarian Universalism, reflected in her leadership positions in her congregation, her service at the District level on the Baltimore/Washington Growth Committee, her active service in web design and outreach, and in her dedication to the larger UU faith."   • Feb. 2007 - Rev. John Crestwell announces his book "Charge of the Chalice" for pre-purchase orders
  • Feb. 2007 - Feature article appeared on UUA web site about Rev. John Crestwell and this church for Black History Month
  • Jan. 29, 2007 - Rev. John Crestwell received a phone call from Rev. Bill Sinkford, President of the UUA, that we're being honored as a Breakthough Congregation for growth in diversity
  • Jan. 26, 2007 - Certified to the UUA 150 members (officially mid-size congregation), 55 children, 100 pledging units, & 100 average weekly attendance
  • April 9, 2006 - District Executive, Rev. Dr. Richard Speck presents a sermon on A Look at the Present and Future
  • Jan. 2, 2006 - Rev. John Crestwell's starts serving full-time.
  • Dec. 18, 2005 - Farewell celebration for Rev. Don Cameron Kragt (brief bio)
  • Sept. 25, 2005 - Rev. John Crestwell's Ordination & Installation Service with Rev. Bill Sinkford, President of the UUA and a host of other UU ministers present. (photos of the service by Bill Grenoble - photo of the laying on of hands by Matt Borchelt)
  • Sept. 25, 2005 - A capital campaign "Many Hearts, Many Beliefs, One Home" is launched (link to congregation's goals) and an announcement that another grant from JPD Chalice Lighters has been awarded.
  • July 10, 2005 - Unanimous vote to call Rev. John Crestwell as our minister.
  • June 25, 2005 - Rev. John Crestwell is fellowshipped by the UUA (photo)
  • May 22, 2005 - At our annual congregational meeting:
    * A budget was approved that included an additional $10,000 toward the Growth Plan with fundraisers and a capital campaign as part of the plan to fund the full budget package which takes effect July 1;
    * A motion was passed to hold a meeting on July 10 to vote on calling Rev. John Crestwell;
    * An announcement was made that there will be an ordination (and possibly installation) ceremony for Rev. John Crestwell on Sept. 25 with expected attendance by UUA President Bill Sinkford;
    * An announcement was made that Rev. Don Cameron-Kragt will begin terminal sabbatical Jan. '06 and departs DMUUC as of Jul 31, '06; and
    * A motion was passed to write a new grant proposal to help fund a full-time ministerial position from Jan. '06 to July '06.

  • May 16, 2005 - John Crestwell was officially ordained by the Board of Trustees at Davies Church with the title "Reverend".
  • May 12, 2005 - John Crestwell received word from the Unitarian Universalist Association that he would receive his certificate of Preliminary Parish Fellowship, with an effective date of 5/12/05, at the Service of the Living Tradition on Friday, June 24th, at General Assembly in Fort Worth, Texas.
  • Feb., 2005 - A review of the number of visitors and members was made and showed the following.:
    * In 2002, we had 48 visitors. 16% of those remained as members or friends. We had 78 pledging units, and RE enrollment was 58.
    * In 2003, we had 54 visitors. 22% of those remained as members or friends. We had 85 pledging units, and RE enrollment was 51.
    * In 2004, we had 71 visitors. 41% of those remained as members or friends. We had 99 pledging units, and RE enrollment was 61.
