Don grew up along the southern coastline of North Carolina. He was a member of the Episcopal Church in his youth. He went to college at Duke University where he started as an English major and then graduated with a major in comparative religion. During his junior year at college, he accompanied his professor to northern India where they toured the religious sites and rural villages. This visit influenced his thinking greatly. He worked six years in the field of social work and counseling. When he discovered Unitarian Universalism, he knew that's where he belonged and soon became a seminary student at Starr King School for the Ministry in Berkeley, California. He was minister at Davies Memorial Unitarian Universalist Church from 1992-2006.
