Lessons From Katrina

Gaia “teach me stillness as the grasses are stilled with light. Earth teach me caring as parents who secure their young. Earth teach me limitation as the ant which crawls on the ground. Earth teach me resignation as the leaves which die in the fall. Mother Earth, teach me to forget myself as melted snow forgets its life.”

All I can do and be is tied up in what I can do for others! And I know this if I know myself! DO YOU KNOW YOURSELF?

“We did not weave the web of life; we are merely a strand in it” and so let us find a way to harmoniously blend, knowing that we are a part of the interdependent web of all existence. We are not masters of the earth, the earth is our master!  Might we learn once and for all from Katrina that we are tied inextricably in a single garment of destiny and what affects one, affects all!  Dr. King thank you for those words…

Maybe I’m crazy. Maybe I’m a dreamer… But I really, really believe that the peace human beings want can be had.   But the peace we want must be the peace we create! And so, I believe in the Beloved Community, I believe we can create, as Jack Johnson, County Executive says, “Livable Communities” for all. I believe it in the depths of my soul and that’s why I’m not afraid to say that if we don’t change the story of how human beings are perceived we cannot change reality. At present the human is seen historically as evil, destructive, God forsaken, and above nature. This is wrong. As we know there are two natures— I am both virtuous and vicious, but I choose each day which path I will serve. It’s my choice. And if I have a choice I can become more virtuous than vicious, if I really work at it!

We cannot put an end to the catastrophes that will come. Death and destruction will always be with us—as it is a part of the web, but humans being inhumane to one another, this I believe we can overcome! We have been given a gift of higher consciousness and let this gift be used as a way to lift people up and not tear them down. Let it be used to find ways to “study war no more.”  Let our great minds be gifts and not curses. We have the power. But it will start when we change the mythological construction of this system that says humans are bad biologically and above other species. Our consciousness may be higher but our destiny is the same as Gaia. We’ve got to wake up and see that WE ARE NATURE! Nature is not “out there” or “over there” it is right here, in this place, all around us. Nature is me; it is you; it is all that is within Mother Earth. You can call that the Spirit of God if you wish but whatever you want to conceptualize it as, know that you are a product of it. You are a “spark in nature’s burning.”

And so, let us be a shelter for each other because “In every life a day will come beneath an angry sky, the earthly things we build will fall and we will question why. Then heaven whispers in our hearts and we are moved to see our neighbor has become a friend and friends a family. Love can build a house that stands forever, stronger than a wall of steel or stone.   We will be a shelter for each other in the storm, and when we come together, we’ll be home.”

AMEN
